"Pterosaurs," were flying reptiles that lived approximately 150 million years along with other dinosaurs. Pterosaurs came in various sizes, from the size of a sparrow to the size of a small plane, and are unique in terms of their mysterious comb, big beak, and long fingers as these attributes are not seen with any other organisms alive today. Pterosaurs' unique and mysterious figure sometimes causes it to be referred to as the "Sky Monster."The recent development of improved analytical technology and from newly discovered fossils are beginning to solve mysteries such as their development and extinction, their habitat segregation with avian species as well as secrets regarding their aviation and ambulation.

This exhibition focuses on pterosaurs, mysterious "Rulers of the Skies in the Age of Dinosaurs." Starting with a structural reconstruction of an entire body and reconstructed living body model of the "Quetzalcoatlus northropi," (the world's largest pterosaur), this exhibition will also feature for the first time ever numerous valuable fossils found in Liaoning province, China.

This traveling exhibition is a traveling has been displayed in Kitakyushu, Osaka, Nagasaki and is currently at the Nagoya site (March 20 - June 15, 2008 at Nagoya City Science Museum). Miraikan will be its final destination, and will be exhibited together with Miraikan's original new exhibition entitled "From the Research of Pterosaurs to the Flight Technology of the Next Generation." We will introduce several examples of next generation flight technology which originated from the research of pterosaurs such as the "Solid State Aircraft" which is an interplanetary probe that flies with artificial "muscles." NASA is conducting research on this aircraft which can flap its "wings" like a living creature.
