3.
Sharing
Concepts
a. Creating New Concepts
If the system does not have a
suitable concept for your data you can easily create your own concept. Anyway
it is better to check out the existing concepts before defining a new one from
scratch. Even though such a concept already exists, you may create your own
version of the concept if the existing definition does not satisfy you. You may
define your version from the scratch of modify from the existing concept (see
Modifying existing concept). Following are the steps for creating a new concept from scratch.
1. Click
on the "Submit a new Concept" tab.
2. Type
in a concept name and press "continue". Note that spaces, underscores and
quotes are not allowed in the concept name.
3. Define
a list of attributes for the concept. For each attribute,
a. Input
a label.
b. Enter
some description about the attribute to help users understand it (optional).
c. You
may also suggest some concepts as the range of values for the attribute.
i.
Click on "Suggest range for values".
ii.
A pop-up window will appear showing the concept cloud. If any concept
name matches the label of the attribute, it will be automatically highlighted.
iii.
You may pick all the concepts suitable for the value range.
iv.
Picked concepts will be listed below the attribute label. You may also
remove any picked concept by clicking "remove".
d. You
can go on adding attributes by clicking "Add more attributes"
4. Enter
some description for your concept (optional)
5. Click
"submit"
6. Confirm
the details of the concept you submitted. If you need to make modifications
click "Modify". Otherwise, click "Submit concept".
7. You
will be taken to the "Submit new data" page. Now you may start entering data
using your new concept as described in the previous section.
b. Modifying Existing Concepts
You do not always need to create
concepts from scratch. You may modify an existing concept to suit your need and
create your own version of the concept as follows.
1. Click
on the "Modify existing Concept" tab
2. Select
a concept that you want to modify and click "Continue"
3. Update
the details of the concept as described above and click "Submit"
4. Confirm
the details of the concepts. If you need to make modifications click "Modify".
Otherwise, click "Submit concept".
5. You
will be taken to the "Submit new data" page. Now you may start entering data
using your version of the concept.
c. Editing/Deleting your concepts
1. Click
on the "Modify existing Concept" tab
2. Click
on your concept that you want to edit/delete
3. A
box will appear with 3 options.
- Update the existing concept
- Define a new version for the concept
- Delete this version of the concept.
Choose the first option if you
want to edit the existing version of your concept. Choose the second option if
you want to make a new version of the concept. Choose the third option if you
want to delete the concept (Note that you can only delete a concept if it has
no data instances).
4. Edit
the concept as described above. Note that if there are existing data instances
of the concept, the attribute labels cannot be edited and the attributes cannot
be deleted. To edit the attribute labels either all data instances should be
deleted first or a new version of the concept should be created (selecting the
third option)
4.
Concept
Cloud
All the concepts created by
different users are visualized as a Concept Cloud. Click on "Concept Cloud" in
the top navigation bar to see the concept cloud. Click on any concept to browse
the data instances of the concept. You can filter the list by entering a
keyword in the "filter" box. You may switch between "Record view" and "Table
view".
Different versions of a concept
with the same name are combined together into a single consolidated concept.
Click on the consolidated concept to browse all the data instances of the
constituent concepts that form the consolidated concept.
Click on the "+" sign beside any
consolidated concept to expand it into a sub-cloud of the constituent concepts.
All the versions of the concept defined by different users will be shown.
Further, different versions of the concept defined by the same user are grouped
together. Click on the user name to browse the data instances of the concept
version defined by a single user.
If you are logged in three tabs
will be shown in the concept cloud page.
- All concepts: Shows all concepts defined by everyone.
- My Concept Collection: see this
- Concepts Created by Me: Shows only the concepts defined by you.
5.
My Concept
Collection
If you are logged in, open the "My
Concept Collection" tab in the Concept Cloud page. Concepts created by you or
concepts adapted by you to form your own versions are automatically added to
your concept collection. You may add any useful concept to your collection or
delete concepts from your collection as explained below.
a. Adding Concepts
1. Click
on "Add" in the "My Concept Collection" tab
2. A
concept cloud with all concepts will be shown with a checkbox to the right of
each concept. Check the concepts you want to add to your collection.
3. Click
"Submit"
b. Removing Concepts
1. Click
on "Remove" in the "My Concept Collection" tab
2. A
concept cloud with only the concepts in your collection will be shown. Check
the concepts you want to remove from your collection.
3. Click
"Submit"
6.
Aligning
Concepts in a Table View
When you browse the data instances
of a consolidated concept you need to align the constituent concepts first so
that the system can produce a uniform table view.
1. Click
on a consolidated concept from the concept cloud (a consolidated concept has a
"+" sign to the right).
2. Click
on "Table view"
3.
If no one has aligned this consolidated concept yet, a tabular form
interface will be shown. The columns of the table show the attributes of
individual constituent concepts. Each row shows an alignment of matching
attributes among these concepts. The system automatically suggests some
possible alignments by comparing the labels.
4.
Complete the alignment by adding alignments not suggested by the system
or correcting the ones that are not right. You may add more rows by clicking
"Add more attributes".
5.
Check the last column that shows the name of the combined attributes.
These names will be used as the table header fields of the unified Table view.
You may update these labels if needed. You may even delete a combined attribute
name if you do not want it in the combined table view.
6.
Click "Submit"
a. Viewing/Updating alignments
If you or
someone has already aligned the constituents in a consolidated concept, you do
not need to align the concepts again to produce a uniform view. However you may
view or edit the alignments by clicking "Edit combined attributes" in the Table
view. You can also view the alignments in RDF format by clicking "RDF" in the
alignment page.
7.
Advanced
Search
With StYLiD you can search data
more effectively and accurately by entering the search criteria in a structured
way.
1. Click
on "Advanced Search" from the top navigation bar.
2. Enter
the concept name you want to search (For e.g., if you want to search hotels
enter "hotel")
3. Enter
a list of desired attribute and value pairs (For e.g., if you want to search
hotels located in Tokyo with rating 5, you would enter (location, tokyo),
(rating, 5)).
4. You
may go on adding search criteria by clicking "Add more.."
5. Click
"Search". You will be shown a list of results that match all the criteria
specified by you.
a. SPARQL query
If you have the knowledge of SPARQL
you may even query the RDF database directly by entering your own SPARQL query.
1. In
the "Advanced Search" page click on "Enter your own SPARQL query".
2. Enter
your SPARQL query and click "Submit".
8.
Machine
Readable Data
StYLiD publishes your data in
machine readable formats - RDF and RDFa. However, you need not worry about it at all. It is
for machines.
An RDFa aware browser would be
able detect such contents and offer suitable operations for you. Many RDFa
tools and plug-ins are becoming available. You may find some at
We may expect more powerful tools
to be available in the future.
A Semantic Clipboard would allow
you to copy structured machine understandable RDFa data from StYLiD into useful
desktop applications or web-based forms. Find out more at
You may copy and paste the
embedded structured data elsewhere and distribute it on the Web so that anybody
can pick it up easily.
